Avondale schedules October paving on six road segments

Avondale will begin a series of pavement-preservation projects in October, bringing a daytime closure to part of La Cañada Boulevard and lane restrictions to five heavily traveled arterial segments.

The city announced the schedule on Sept. 23. Work is planned between Oct. 5 and Oct. 30, with the most disruptive project set for La Cañada Boulevard between Central Avenue and La Jolla Boulevard.

Where and when crews will work

• La Cañada Boulevard, Central Avenue to La Jolla Boulevard: Oct. 5-10. The road is scheduled to close from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. during work hours.
• Dysart Road, Van Buren Street to Western Avenue: Oct. 6-7.
• Dysart Road, Indian School Road to Thomas Road: Oct. 24-25.
• Thomas Road, 107th Avenue to east of 103rd Avenue: Oct. 27-28.
• Indian School Road, Dysart Road to Old Litchfield Road: Oct. 27-28.
• Van Buren Street, Manzanita Drive to the Agua Fria River bridge: Oct. 29-30.

The five arterial projects are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drivers should expect lane restrictions and short delays while crews move through each corridor. Avondale says a shadow truck will be used to protect workers, and signs will be posted before construction starts.

The city classifies the arterial work as slurry sealing, a preservation treatment intended to extend the useful life of pavement. The La Cañada Boulevard project is a mill-and-overlay job, which requires removing and replacing the road surface and is why that segment will close during working hours.

What drivers should know

The Oct. 27-28 schedule puts crews on both Thomas Road and Indian School Road at the same time. Both connect with Dysart Road, so drivers traveling through central and north Avondale should allow extra time or choose another route.

La Cañada Boulevard work is scheduled during fall break to reduce disruption, according to the city. Access conditions can change as crews progress, and pavement schedules can be affected by weather or field conditions.
