Three weekend freeway closures will disrupt travel across the West Valley beginning Friday night, Sept. 25, including two long Loop 101 shutdowns and another full closure of eastbound Loop 303 near Interstate 17.
The Arizona Department of Transportation advisory issued Sept. 24 says the affected freeway sections are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28. The work will cut several direct routes between northwest Phoenix, Glendale, the I-10 corridor and north Phoenix.
Eastbound Loop 101 closes in north Glendale
Eastbound Loop 101 will close between 75th and 51st avenues from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. The eastbound on-ramps at Union Hills Drive and Bell Road also will close.
ADOT recommends eastbound Union Hills Drive to 51st Avenue as the detour for drivers reconnecting with Loop 101. The closure is part of the Loop 101 widening project.
The shutdown affects the Agua Fria Freeway segment used by drivers traveling from Peoria and Glendale toward I-17. Surface streets near Bell Road and Union Hills Drive could carry additional traffic during the closure.
Southbound Loop 101 closes near I-10
Southbound Loop 101 will close from Indian School Road to I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. The ramps from southbound Loop 101 to eastbound and westbound I-10 also will close.
Southbound on-ramps at Glendale Avenue, Cardinals Way and Camelback Road are included in the closure. ADOT suggests using 83rd, 91st or 99th avenues to travel south and reach I-10 on either side of the work zone.
This closure is tied to interchange improvements. It will affect trips to and from State Farm Stadium, Westgate, the Cardinals Way corridor and the I-10 employment areas in Tolleson, Avondale and Goodyear.
Eastbound Loop 303 closes at I-17
Eastbound Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive will close between 43rd Avenue and I-17 from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers can travel north on 43rd Avenue and east on Dove Valley Road to connect with I-17.
The Loop 303 closure continues bridge and interchange construction at the freeway’s eastern end. West Valley Post previously detailed the closure sequence and the larger Loop 303/I-17 project, which is adding lanes and direct freeway-to-freeway ramps.
Westbound Loop 303 also remains narrowed to one lane between I-17 and 43rd Avenue through October. The posted work-zone speed limit is 45 mph. Project history and current corridor work are tracked in the West Valley Post Loop 303 Development & Infrastructure Tracker.
Other Phoenix-area closures
ADOT’s weekend advisory also lists closures on southbound State Route 51, both directions of Loop 101 in the Scottsdale area and westbound Loop 202 in the East Valley. State Route 347 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between Casa Blanca and Riggs roads.
