GOODYEAR, Ariz. Abrazo West Campus plans to add 12 intensive-care beds through a $6.5 million expansion scheduled to open in late November, increasing critical-care capacity at the hospital near McDowell and Litchfield roads.
Abrazo announced the investment Nov. 6. The health system said the added beds will support patients facing trauma, stroke, cardiac emergencies, complex surgery and other life-threatening conditions. The hospital is at 13677 W. McDowell Road in Goodyear.
The announcement establishes the investment, bed increase and expected opening window. It does not disclose the ICU’s current bed count, the total number of ICU beds after the expansion, or a specific opening date.
What the expansion changes
Intensive-care beds are equipped and staffed for patients who need continuous monitoring and advanced support. Adding 12 beds gives Abrazo West room to accept more critically ill patients locally and, according to the health system, support transfers from elsewhere in the Phoenix area when specialized capacity is tight.
Abrazo said the added capacity is intended in part for periods of higher seasonal demand. The company did not publish projected patient volumes, staffing totals or a construction timetable beyond the late-November opening target.
The project is a hospital expansion announcement, not an open facility yet. The next milestone is the unit’s expected opening later this month. West Valley Post will update the status when Abrazo confirms that the beds are in service.
Part of a broader Goodyear medical buildout
The ICU project follows several 2026 additions around Abrazo West. In January, Abrazo marked the completion of the adjacent 46,000-square-foot Litchfield Medical Building, which combines medical offices with a 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital. The rehabilitation facility began seeing patients in April, according to Abrazo.
In September, Abrazo West received DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. The designation recognizes hospitals capable of treating complex stroke cases, which can require intensive neurological monitoring and advanced procedures. Read West Valley Post’s coverage of the stroke certification.
The health system has also identified a hybrid operating room, upgraded cardiac catheterization labs, expanded interventional radiology capacity and new surgical equipment among recent investments at the campus. In Buckeye, Abrazo opened a 60,000-square-foot medical office building on Verrado Way with cardiology, orthopedics, sports medicine, neurology and other specialties.
The ICU expansion adds inpatient capacity to that wider network of hospital, rehabilitation and specialty-care investments. West Valley Post is adding the project to its West Valley Hospital & Healthcare Development Tracker.
